In June, I will be teaching a two different Reiki Trainings. Reiki is a hands-on healing therapy that promotes vitality and harmony – physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Reiki creates a profound sense of well-being by gently encouraging the body’s own innate capacity to release tension, relax, and find natural alignment.  Reiki is suitable for everyone, simple to learn and can be used in conjunction with other modalities such as restorative yoga and aromatherapy. Places in these intensive small group trainings fill up fast so reach deep into your heart and see if Summer healing is your groove.

Spring Into Dance & Wellness - NYLA! LANG DANCE! GAIAM! YOGA SHANTI!

Dear Ones,

Keely Garfield Dance (KGD) will present an encore performance of Mandala at New York Live Arts: Live Ideas 2018/Radical Vision Festival on April 21st at 7.30pm.

Radical Vision is informed by a desire to find the temerity to change the things we cannot accept. How do we not simply protect democracy, but make it stronger? What are new (radical) ways forward—ways that go to the roots of our current democratic crisis? The festival will present five days of activity around the idea of an open society, to imagine its future and understand its past. Through public forums, performances, readings and workshops, we will conduct a forward-looking, critical appraisal of key democratic institutions including the press, technology corporations, criminal justice, electoral process.

“What forms can we create in modern society that will be conducive to seeing the oneness of life? What are the forms that will make it easier to experience interconnectedness?" - Zen Peacemakers Order.

This inquiry motivates Mandala, an act of dance that unites movers and makers in communal listening, embodied ritual, and a call to social action. Part folk, part protest, and part shamanic-rite, Mandala asserts that there is valor in dancing, and valor can move from individual bodies into the body of the world, activate positive change, and transform the times.

Mandala is performed by yours truly and a star-powered cast Paul Hamilton, Raja Feather Kelly, Emma Rose Brown, Angie Pittman, Doug LeCours, Eleanor Smith, Dwayne Brown, Carlo Antonio Villaneuva, Lawrence Goldhuber, Jamel West, and spirited guest artist students from Lang Dance, The New School.

There is a West African proverb, "When you pray, move your feet!" In response MANDALA brings a community of moving parts together to make things whole. ZPO's Three Tenets—Not-knowing, Bearing Witness, and Taking Action—spur us on and provide a map of sorts. Ideas recede, listening appears, and dancing will save our souls.

MANDALA is performed by Paul Hamilton, Raja Feather Kelly, Emma Rose Brown, Eleanor Smith, and yours truly! KGD is joined by a multifabulous cast that includes my spirited students from Lang Dance Department, The New School, as well as star-powered surprise guest artists!

This presentation of MANDALA is part of a shared evening with Same As Sister/Briana Brown-Tipley & Hilary Brown, and Ni'ja Whitson, curated by Reggie Wilson as part of Danspace Project Platform: Dancing Platform, Praying Grounds, Churches, Blackness, and Downtown-Dance. Pick up a copy of the Platform Journal to read my essay, "Holy Moly" on making dance, identity, and impermanence.

When Ms. Garfield begins by telling the audience, “None of us can do this on our own,” you might wonder if her tongue is in her cheek. But when the work ends with the dancers turning in a circle, hand in hand as the lights fade, it’s pretty clear that she means it. This is not a war dance. It’s more like prayer
